Here we go! August is busy. My summer garden is in full swing and producing, but now is the time to get started on indoor fall seedlings, and prepping beds for planting. I recently expanded and added two more raised beds (separate post, coming soon…) so I have a lot of empty space to fill, hooray!
I keep things pretty simple, and usually grow mostly basics that I know will be eaten and enjoyed by my fam of four.
Seeds I have started indoors this month are:
Peas: Regular, Sugar Snap, and Snow
Brussels Sprouts
Broccoli
Caulifower
Spinach, Simpson Lettuce, Salad Bowl Lettuce
And some fresh herbs: cilantro, thyme, parsley, basil.
Seeds I will be sowing directly this month:
Carrots: Rainbow and Danvers
Radishes
Parsnips (maybe)
I used to try to grow a wider variety of things, but when it comes down to it – life is simpler growing less types of veggies, but a higher quantity of those ones we do like and actually eat. If I had an acre I could grow all kinds of things! But with the limits of a backyard garden, it’s more satisfying for me to grow the veggies that will get used up in the kitchen.
What are your favorite fall veggies? Do you have one that you absolutely don’t like? (Ours is kale. gross.)
