It’s that time again! It’s rainy, wet, spring is almost here, and the slugs are going to be a much bigger problem later if I don’t get ahead of it now and start some preventative maintenance. Here is a link to my original post with more specific details. Beer Traps
And here is a quick video I made as a refresher and to show how easy it is to do. If you’re on Instagram or YouTube, follow along with me to see more videos and fun, silly stuff!! Happy gardening <3
Do you love #beertraps or hate them? I know they aren’t for everyone, but they definitely work for me to stop slugs from demolishing my lettuces and greens 🤗🥬
Here are some tips if you’re interested in giving beer traps a try:
🍺 Cups work better, shallow pans just provide a refreshing beverage for the evil slugs to stop and sip on their way to devouring lettuce and greens.
🍺 1 beer will fill 3 cups that are about 4-5 oz.
🍺 I put the traps about every 3-4 feet. If I’m ahead of the game I don’t need as many for preventative maintenance, but if I wait too long until there are slugs everywhere (I try it to do this, lesson learned the hard way) I’ll put more cups, like every 1-2 feet.
🍺 If it’s rainy, I’ll use something to cover them so they don’t get all watered down. I propped up a tray on a brick for coverage but it’s still open on the sides for slugs to come in and DIE.
🍺 I’ll refill as they get full or if it gets all murky and gross. Maybe every week or two weeks.
🍺 Just regular old cheap beer works best. The hard seltzers or super sugary drinks like Mike’s don’t really work well in my experience. (I tried using random booze left in our garage fridge once) It’s the yeast in the beer that attracts the slugs, so if you don’t have some Bud Light or Coors in the fridge, just run to 7-11 and grab a 40oz of Natty Light on the cheap! 😂
Note: I don’t know if this works on snails. My sis-in-law was battling snails and the beer traps didn’t seem to do anything unfortunately.
How do YOU fight slugs?!? Do beer traps work for you too? Let me know in the comments!
